Just looking to the future; I would like to use an external antenna with this WiFi device. Does a pin-compatible version exist or will I need to look elsewhere?

Also, I understand that this info is available somewhere but what is the maximum baud of each UART on the BV509?

Cheers!

yes,
there is a version with a socket for an antenna as in this device (http://www.byvac.com/index.php/BV510)

I think the Baud rate may go up to 2,000,000 but have not checked for a while.

Hi Jim,

I take it that what you mean is the ESP8266 module shown plugged in to the BV510 is pin compatible with the BV509, right?

Where would I find this module?

Cheers,

There is a new BV509 not yet released that could use the module. I assume the BV509 (BV508?) that you have uses the PTH type (plug in) which does not have an external antenna.

If you want to use the SMD version of the ESP8266 there is the BV107_b which is a serial to wifi module. This can be supplied with the antenna type but is not advertised. It is the same cost but if an antenna is required then that costs £3.0 extra.

If you have a BV508 or BV509_b (not BV509_d - not available at time of writing) the above module will plug in (but is not plug compatible) as a replacement for the original PTH ESP8266.

Yes, I have the BV509 with the plug-in WiFi module.

Sounds like the BV107-b is the way to go. I'm not particularly fond of piggy-backed boards so this will work for me.
I build industrial control systems and like to have my boards securely fixed.

Many thanks.

Cheers.
